Manufacturing Spring

During my third, interminable winter in Minnesota, I realized that Spring could be more of a state of mind, that one could maybe trigger by taking action.

Here are two ideas to make winter more bearable, that came out of the first soup gathering of the season. Our fantastic guests reminded me of the importance of “flavors from home” and of sharing those flavors with friends. They are so comforting, healing and heartwarming. Sharing jokes, good or bad is also key (actually bad jokes are the best). ❄️ ❄️ 🍲 🍜 🥣 ❄️ ❄️ More details about that first soup gathering to come in a blog post at the end of the week and in a zine format at the end of the month 👋
Introducing bi-monthly soup-making gatherings at our home in Saint Paul. Opening our kitchen to two artists/makers/creatives/activists at a time. 🍲🥕🥦🌶🍆🥬🥔🍠🍅🌽🍲 An exploration of hospitality, conviviality and self-care. A warm, heart-opening and possibly tasty way to make winter more bearable, connect, share and learn from each other. #allyouneedissoup #winterremedy #eatyourvegetablespeople
If you have a deep need to say something about the world, about your experience of it, about your struggles, your hopes, about injustices you see... If you say those things from a place of authenticity... YOUR VOICE IS RELEVANT. Whether or not what you « make » is labeled as « artistically irrelevant » by the art world. Whether or not you had access to art education or even to art supplies in your formative years. Whether or not you have a « following », an « audience » validating your work. ***************************** Believing in the relevance of your voice while accepting that your work does not need to be labeled « artistically relevant » by an audience won’t eradicate self-doubt, but it is pretty damn empowering.
There are more trees in Minneapolis and Saint Paul than in any city I’ve ever lived in. Yet I’m always surprised at how people who live here don’t seem to really notice them most of the year. You only see people pause and look up when fall colors are here. And you rarely see people touch them, let alone sit against their magnificent trunks. I have whole walking courses designed around my favorite trees. There are trees I think of as destinations. On a dreary day like today, think of a tree you love, and picture walking to it under a bright blue sky. #selfiewithatree #oak #treelover #minneapolis #saintpaulmn
Claiming my own artistic irrelevance in black ink. Almost like a tattoo, on a second skin, a shirt I’ve had forever. Why claim it out loud? So the thought of it stops uselessly going around and around in my head. The more I meet and spend time with makers, the more I see how the question of the artistic relevance of their work is a hindrance, keeping them from fully putting themselves out there, and from truly exploring what they want to say. Making is a compulsion, a necessity for a lot of us. Making is life and energy. That should be enough. ——————————————— Page 3 of self portrait book n.3, 15 year old shirt. #printmaking #slowstitching #origami #selfportrait
Better than any self-help book, a milkweed seed in the wind. Narration by little J on the second video, waiting for the bus two days ago.
