Claiming my own artistic irrelevance in black ink. Almost like a tattoo, on a second skin, a shirt I’ve had forever. Why claim it out loud? So the thought of it stops uselessly going around and around in my head. The more I meet and spend time with makers, the more I see how the question of the artistic relevance of their work is a hindrance, keeping them from fully putting themselves out there, and from truly exploring what they want to say. Making is a compulsion, a necessity for a lot of us. Making is life and energy. How can Green card holders be politically relevant? There are 13.2 million of us out there. We can of course be POLITICALLY RELEVANT CONSUMERS and choose with intent how we spend our $$. But more importantly, we can be POLITICALLY RELEVANT STORYTELLERS. Share our migration stories, let US citizens with voting rights know what it’s like to live and work in their country. Page 1 of my third self-portrait book. A book I can wear and dance in, a book I can inhabit. ******************************* An official letter from the voter registration center reminded me that I am not allowed to vote, like millions of permanent alien residents. We are POLITICALLY IRRELEVANT in this country. I have been for four years. It’s an extremely frustrating thing to be. I cant vote even in local elections, to say wether or not I like our trash collecting system or the way our schools are run. More advanced countries, like New-Zealand, Denmark and Germany let their foreign residents vote on local issues. ***************************** Why not apply for citizenship, you might ask? I don’t want to be a pretend-American. I’m looking for other ways to be politically relevant. There has been a lot of noise in my life and in my head lately. Unfamiliar, overwhelming noise at social gatherings that took my voice away. Familiar noise in my head that keeps me from moving ahead freely. Paradoxically, I feel the urge to not be silent in this world, but I need silence to go on having a voice. I took a minute this morning to try to turn off the noise in my head and in my life.
